Kumera Technology Center’s new innovation – the Heat Recovery Dryer – sets thermal efficiency in copper concentrate drying applications at a completely new level

12.04.2017

Kumera is the forerunner in steam drying of copper concentrates. We have delivered over twenty steam dryer systems around the world, mainly for copper smelters. Benefits of the Kumera technology are minimum emission and energy efficiency.

In order to further improve the energy efficiency Kumera Technology Center has developed a new application, namely the Heat Recovery Dryer. It enhances the energy utilization in the drying process significantly. This results in reduction of energy required in the drying process by 30-40%, thus making the Kumera Steam Dryer by far the most feasible and sustainable drying process in the world. This is due to the very low energy consumption and zero emission.

The very same Heat Recovery Dryer can alternatively be used to increase existing drying capacity by some 40%. This can be accomplished without any additional energy. This capacity increase is an interesting possibility for customers with limited amount of steam available or those with a strong focus on operational expenses. Due to the versatility of the new Heat Recovery Dryer it can amend existing brown field drying operations as well as be installed on any new green field operations. The new process also allows recovery of water which may be of a great interest in arid areas.

Our innovation is based on utilization of latent heat of the evaporated water from the primary steam dryer, i.e. recirculating of energy containing gases in the drying plant. Significant part of the prevailing latent heat is released in the subsequent process stage (the Heat Recovery Dryer) by partial condensation of the water vapor.

Since 2013 a considerable amount of pilot testing at Kumera’s own Testing Center in Kangasala has proven the feasibility. As a result the Kumera Heat Recovery Dryer is now available for Kumera Steam Dryers all over the world.
