Kumera AS attended the ITS 2016 in Boston, USA

ITS (International Tug, Salvage & OSV Convention and Exhibition) is the major event for the global maritime industry, attracting ship-owners, designers, -builders and key suppliers/OEM’s. This year’s ITS in Boston was the 24th time in 48 years the event was organized. Kumera AS also attended the event and exhibited Kumera’s products within marine power transmissions.

The conference side of the event offers in-depth papers and discussions on the latest trends and technological developments regarding shipbuilding, particularly for the tug and OSV type vessels. The exhibition side enables interesting networking with both old and new connections.


Since the beginning of the hybrid-technology trend Kumera AS has been engaged in this field. By offering and developing tailored gearboxes to be part of a hybrid propulsion system, we ensure our place at the fore-front of this development. One reference for such a specialized product is the combined propulsion and multi-PTO gearboxes which we delivered to Norwegian tug owner Bukser & Berging. For their latest anchor handling tug we delivered two gearboxes each designed for twin diesel engine input and output to practically everything: the main azimuth thrusters, shaft generator, Fi-Fi pump and winch pump. In addition there is two-speed gearing. Although this tug has a pure mechanical drive train, our system allows to always optimize the drive conditions. The ship was put to work one year ago and since then it has achieved great fuel savings. 

At ITS we displayed the Kumera gearbox and the tug and system and our stand drew a lot of positive attention. More and more people seem to realize that in addition to having large power losses the electrical systems are often very costly. Depending on ship type and size, other systems may be better suited. We offer appropriate solutions for every client and all conditions, for instance to allow the client to combine diesel engine with electric motor for their drive train.

Fi-Fi drive systems have always been a core business for Kumera AS, and we are well acknowledged for our PTO gearboxes. The application area is also an inspiring business area where we continue to stay and grow.

One common topic for everyone attending the ITS show was the current market situation. The challanging situation caused by the low oil price affects us all. However, there are signs of optimism too. Ships are being built and several companies are planning ahead, inquiring for new builds and systems adapted to and prepared for the demands of the future.
